The glue is dried and we are ready to measure for the cover. One of my favorite places in the world is Texas Art Supply’s stationery section. There are so many choices of paper of various weights, textures and patterns. This time around I am going to do a full cover so I choose a sheet big enough, and not too heavy.

First, measure the spine. If you are using cardstock for your cover there is no need to be on the mark. If this were a hardbound book, it would have to be precise.

Trace and cut the measurements for the book including the spine and cut it out. It’s wise to leave a quarter inch safety border just in case you mess up the cuts. In the pic below I added less and paid for my mistake with a slightly crooked cover.

Next, I scored the spine with the Exacto knife so it would fold easily without damaging the cardstock.

use a slight pressure to define the lines without cutting the paper completely.

You’re ready for glue! The best part in my opinion. Just don’t go nuts like when you glued the signatures together. Use the brush to slather some on the spine and the back of the book.

beautiful…except where I messed up.

Secure the spine with those handy clips. I let it dry overnight before I removed them.

Nice! Now time to get work. That sequel isn’t going to write itself.
